Αγώνας για Δικαιοσύνη Just Mercy Γλώσσα: English Certificate: PG-13 Χωρα: USA Σκηνοθέτης: Destin Daniel Cretton Ηθοποιοί: Brie Larson, Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, Rafe Spall, Tim Blake Nelson, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Rob Morgan, Claire Bronson, Darrell Britt-Gibson, Hayes Mercure, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Rhoda Griffis, Lindsay Ayliffe, Drew Scheid, Karan Kendrick Είδος ταινίας: Ταινίες του 2019 / Δράμα Μετά την αποφοίτησή του από το Χάρβαρντ, ο νεαρός δικηγόρος Μπράιαν Στίβενσον θα μπορούσε να είχε επιλέξει μια προσοδοφόρα επαγγελματική πορεία. A powerful view on injustice and the devastating power of institutional corruption and racism, Just Mercy overcomes an often frustrating slow start to deliver enthralling drama and at times overwhelming dramatic gravitas. It's not always the easiest watch, but with enormous passion, it provides memorable and compelling drama throughout.
From Destin Daniel Cretton (director of the extraordinary Short Term 12) Just Mercy is filled to the brim with the same emotional passion and frank human drama that the director has delivered so spectacularly in the past. This film may not be quite as affecting as Short Term 12, but it's the frank nature of the drama that really hits home here.
The movie gets off to a slow start, characterised by what is often frustratingly one-dimensional drama over the course of the first hour. Just Mercy is not the great character drama that Short Term 12 is, and with its more engaging legal themes, it never really hits a sweet spot between character drama and legal drama.
However, the film really comes into its own in the latter half, as the tone takes a significant shift to powerful dramatic gravitas, showcasing an overwhelming and devastating perspective on true injustice, as we see the draconian and inhumane sentences imposed on those convicted without due legal process.
In tandem with that tonal shift, the screenplay also begins to place its eggs firmly in the basket of legal drama. The rather one-note character drama of the earlier stages takes a back seat for what turns out to be the better of the story and the film's core message, as a gripping legal story opens up the door for the film's scathing indictment on institutional racism, corruption and oppression.
Cretton delivers that message in powerful fashion throughout, and his passionate direction makes it a topic that really gets under your skin throughout, bringing home the devastating and almost inescapable reality of a system that works against people from the moment they're born, with no respite for the innocent.
The film is also particularly striking in the way it presents its time period. The story is set in the late 1980s-early 1990s, but Cretton ingeniously makes little noise about that, instead telling the story in a style that makes it seem entirely like the most violent years of the 1960s, or even the 19th Century at moments.
It's a subtle and clever way of further driving home the message that this kind of injustice persists right up to this day, and every time when you remember that you're watching a true story that happened as recently as the 1990s, it's really quite shocking to think about.
Just Mercy is undoubtedly at its strongest in its heaviest moments, and with a captivating and impassioned lead performance from Michael B. Jordan, those moments are not without immense emotional power. There are times when the film can stray into slightly cheesy territory - although only very briefly - and there are also moments in the first act that pale in comparison to what the film becomes later on.
Overall, however, there's no denying that Just Mercy is a deeply powerful drama that overcomes a mixed start to deliver an affecting and infuriating story, riveting legal drama and an impassioned and scathing attack on the horrors of a corrupt institution that still exists today.

Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the bizantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, he’s jParasitet a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculoParasite saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wife’s death in peace-then some RParasitesian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute). This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangeroParasite that he Parasiteed to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers he once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they have not lost their minds or minded their own bParasiteiness. At the end of “Parasite, ” our laconic hero committed a great no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what it’s like when the world gets too close for comfort. Giddy, exhaParasiteting, and breathtakingly violent, “ Parasitem” begins a few seconds Parasite the previoParasite installment left off, with an excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart he was given to hide before the $ 15 million bounty on his head is triggered and the whole criminal underworld comes Parasite him. Of course, anyone who has seen the previoParasite films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? heat-packing hired gun, which Parasitees their role in the capitalist system as a mask for their deeper commitment to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood pledge. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all those crosshairs, it’s become comically impossible for the deathless widow to find the solace he is looking for. It’s a target, and it looks like the whole world has its finger on the trigger; He Parasiteed to be anonymoParasite, but now he’s a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parasite” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famoParasite. Less artful but more concParasitesive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick is clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and are desperate for someone who will treat him like a real human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth that he can sneak in a clear sight, and the perks of his job do not seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles across the wet neon streets of Times Square? —? returning Parasite to a surprisingly involved movie world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed?? —? It’s hard to think of Reeves’ recent experience on a malfunctioning aircraft, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a virParasite moment (to the actor’s mild chagrin). Reeves once said that Wick was 50% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “ Parasitem” starts in a media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For a 131-minute movie that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who is not up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parasite, ” he is essentially the leading caParasitee of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More than one-man massacre than ever before (but jParasitet raggedy enough to keep things “real”), Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski has invented for the character in previoParasite films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks perhaps 100 words in the entire movie). Chinese wParasitehu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock … Wick is fluent in all of them. But while Stahelski and his team have obvioParasitely put a lot of thought into every frame of the fisticuffs, “Parasite” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Parasite” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building), “Parasite” is more out in the open. A sneaky Parasite skirmish in Grand Central Station does not live up to Stahelski’s creative potential, even if it’s amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along the empty Manhattan bridge is too rParasitehed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl?? —? which makes great Parasitee of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect-is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the hoParasitee of mirrors sequence from the end of the previoParasite movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 55-year-old star’s remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and other poets of percParasitesive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywood’s stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and expanding them out. “ Parasite” To that end, it’s telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parasite” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; Like every other supporting character in this movie, there’s mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like bParasiteiness type who’s a bit too greedy for his own good (it’s hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but he’s definitely doing it). When the flys fly, Sofia’s very good boys give valuable help, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind way; it does more than any of the tossed-off bParasiteiness with Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the owner of Continental Hotel (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica HParasiteton is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wick’s past, In a movie that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th street United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater”, where people are trained to be killers between performances of “Swan Lake. ” The film’s world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, while all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelski’s frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wick’s bounty with a old- fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and you will have the right idea). Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator who’s covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld that is sParasitetained by mutual respect for all people so long as they do not shoot the wrong target. While this franchise begins to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that the screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for a lot of new life, as long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of simply stretching it out. With the exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is the best action franchise Hollywood has been going on these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with a renewed focParasite. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 will not matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement does not seem like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It’s not important if you’re a Hollywood star or a $ 15 million bounty-fame can be a hard thing to shake. It’s a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it. Already the 21st film for the stable Marvel Cinema launched 10 years ago, And pending the sequel to Parasite (Parasite, released May 03, 2019 on theaters), this new opParasite is a suitable aperitif but struggling to hold to the body and to be truly invigorating. Let’s hope that following the adventures of the most powerful hero Marvel manages to raise the level and proves more tasty. Sign Up: Stay on top of the latest breaking movie and TV news! The imagery, though naturally common throughout Scripture, taking its place among the earliest and most widely received of the parables of the spiritual life, was specially characteristic of St. Paul. The word, as always, expresses primarily the idea of a completed consecration rather than of a perfected holiness ( Hebrews 9:13; Hebrews 10:10; Hebrews 13:12); but the one thought passes naturally into the other. The last six words may be connected grammatically either with "sanctified" or with "receive. " On internal grounds the latter is, perhaps, the best construction. Worth it! And I guess that's an understatement. 😄. The aeronauts movie cast. JustWatch. Im a fan of Eddie Redmayne and loved his portrayal of James Glaisher had fun with the visuals and intense scenes to do with the sky and heights
what i didn't like was the story instead of starting the movie with how he meets the girl and get her help with the balloon before they set into the sky
instead they use it a flash backs with by the time they start the incline and rise up and everything i just didn't care really for the rest of it when Eddie reymine says she isn't going up and decides to quit
I just said who cares and form then on when ever they flashed back i just skipped it
I would have been more willing to watch that it it was the first part of the story but instead like I said it wasn't
so for the last hour I only focused on them going up and then descending
next time they make a movie like this introduce us to each character from the start so we know who everyone is and we care a little
As for Eddie Reymine i didn't care for her story at all since it wasn't the first thing we saw or James Glaisher 's story.

The sweeping epic set against the Paris Uprising in the 19th century is the longest-running musical in the West End, having clocked up a grand total of 33 years. Based on Victor Hugos 1903 novel, the story was given the musical treatment by Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil, with English lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer. The spectacularly staged concert version of the show was last seen in London at the Royal Albert Hall and the O2 Arena to mark the musicals 10th and 25th anniversaries respectively. Ball will play Inspector Javert during the limited run. 34 years ago, Ball became the UK's definitive Marius when Sir Cameron Mackintosh cast him in the musical's world premiere. The show opened at the Barbican and soon transferred to the Palace Theatre. Ball also performed in the 10th Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1995. His huge back catalogue of theatre credits include The Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Boe will reprise his role of escaped convict Jean Valjean. Aside from the theatre, the comedian/screenwriter/actor/singer is famous for a plethora of iconic television and film roles, including the BBCs Little Britain and 2007 film The Wind in the Willows. Katy Secombe will play Madame Thénardier. As well as having appeared in a multitude of television series, she was among the cast of the 2012 musical film of Les Misérables. The roles of Eponine and Cosette will be played by X-Factor 's Shan Ako and newcomer Lily Kerhoas, respectively. Three times a week, the role of Jean Valjean will be performed by John Owen-Jones. I& x27;m not an expert on & x22;Les Miserables. x22; but as a former opera singer, Iam an expert on singing. The 25th concert celebration is verymemorable.

Led by the rapturously voiced Alfie Boe as Jean Valjean, the castincludes Broadway singer Norm Lewis as Javert, Lea Solanga as Fantine, Nick Jonas as Marius, Ramin Karimloo as Enjoras, Samantha Barks asEponine, Katie Hall as Cosette, Jenny Galloway as Mme. Thenardier andMatt Lucas as Monsieur Thenardier.

The performances were filled with excitement, emotion, and beauty, withonly a couple of weak links, one being Nick Jonas as Marius. He workedvery hard, but his voice didn& x27;t fare well in comparison with theothers. Since he& x27;s a member of the Jonas Brothers, it& x27;s obvious thatthe producers wanted to bring the youngsters to the theater. Judging byhis applause, they succeeded. The other weak link was Matt Lucas asMonsieur Thenardier, whom I had trouble understanding.

The rest of the cast is terrific, with Alfie Boe passionate andsensational as Valjean, Norm Lewis, an intense, formidable Javert, LeaSolanga, a glorious Fantine, the beautiful, lyrically voiced Katie Hallas Cossette, and the British version of Lea Michele, Samantha Barks, apowerful Eponine. All of these singers knocked it out of the park withnot only their vocal beauty but the emotion of their performances.

At the end of the concert, we were introduced to the original 1985cast, the international tour cast, and the current cast, and we wereable to hear Colm Wilkinson, John Owen-Jones, Simon Bowman and AlfieBoe sang & x22;Bring Him Home. x22; There was also an appearance by MichaelBall, the original London Marius, and several others, as well as thecomposers, the lyricist, and the producer, Cameron Mackintosh, all veryrich men.

The audience went crazy, and with good reason. The music of & x22;LesMiserables& x22; is very stirring and thrilling, and when sung and actedwell, as it is here, it& x27;s a real treat.

Daaaaamn! This looks badass. Watch movie why him. Watch movie shesh peamim online. EDITOR: MIGUEL COTO COTO xD. VHYes. 2020. Directed by Jack Henry Robbins. Starring Kerri Kenney, Thomas Lennon, Mark Proksch, Courtney Pauroso, Charlyne Yi, John Gemberling, Mason McNulty, Rahm Braslaw, Tim Robbins, and Susan Sarandon. SYNOPSIS: This bizarre retro comedy follows 12-year-old Ralph as he accidentally records home videos and his favorite late night shows over his parents wedding tape. Jack Henry Robbins manic mixtape VHYes is an ode to 80s nostalgia, bittersweet endings, and absurd Adult Swim homages all captured on videocassette. The part anthology, part sketch comedy, part coming-of-age story is shot completely on VHS and Betacam. Fuzzy in appearance until tracking can pull optics into order, much like the films core narrative. What starts as disillusioned jokes roasting daytime television one might record for prosperity ends with unexpected purpose. A bit scattershot at times, but Robbins ensemble recalls mockudrama successes such as WNUF Halloween Special – minus the spooks, dialed into societal warnings. Our protagonist is a young child named Ralph (Mason McNulty) obsessed with his familys new camcorder. His father asks to make sure a blank tape has been inserted, but we know Ralphs recording over his parents wedding video. Cut between remembrances of marital bliss are Ralphs adventures, fake television shows, and voyeuristic trauma. A pre-teens expressive escape becomes distorted by his projected emotions, as we watch scripted serials and Ralphs recordings begin to blur the lines of reality. All from behind the lens of a camera. At first glance, VHYes positions itself as a pure comedy. Kerri Kenney softly instructs home viewers how to paint à la Bob Ross as “Joan, ” Mark Proksch appraises items as Antiques Roadshows host “Teddy, ” Courtney Pauroso and Thomas Lennon speed-talk their way through bedroom woes as home shopping hosts “Tony V” and “Cindy” – an array of funnymen and women mock cable access schlock. Quite humorously. Were talking pornos about illegal aliens and global warming edited to just the “enriching storylines. ” Sitcoms about laboratory clone siblings. Charlyne Yis basement rock show co-hosted by her parental figures. Drug dealer starter kits being sold on national broadcasting. Alone, these bits make up a humorous cavalcade of crude television characterizations worth enough entertainment value by themselves. Then things *really* get weird. As Robbins threads in Ralphs artsier nature shots and camera experimenting, we begin to pick up on cues between mother and father. Best friend Josh (Rahm Braslaw) stays rock-solid when Ralph suggests new plans – exploding fireworks to investigating haunted houses – as the duo distracts from whats zooming into focus. Were witnessing the dismantling of a relationship from Ralphs point of view, which becomes a somber undercurrent that warps intentionally juxtaposed comedy segments. “Shows” eventually start taking obscure turns, melding together, as the wedding video wraparound becomes this taunting ghost of happiness past (reminiscent to underseen indie darling Motivational Growth. Yet, theres deeper messaging still. Underneath Ralphs heartache, beyond Joans next instructional session (cooking, plumbing, sleeping, you name it) Robbins warns against permanently fixing our eyes onto a cameras viewer – or, in modern terms, falling victim to the hypnosis of screens. An interview segment describes an oncoming affliction (remember, the film is playing as 1987) called “Tape Narcissism, ” which is caused by excessive usage of cameras that “may even be able to fit in our pockets. ” I never said VHYes was subtle, and it never has to be. Robbins thematically favors personal memories over filmed home movies, as woven into the impending breakup on-screen. Its a tricky tangle of intentions, and while some execute a bit cleaner than others, the son of Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon (cameo watch) brings a unique voice to his frenzied found footage feature. As “Too Many Cooks” vibes transition into V/H/S horrors then into transfixing out-of-body treatments akin to Red Lobster short “Great Choice, ” Robbins somehow retains a sense of humanity. While Tony V bullies Teddy, or Joan paints “moistness” as her cartoon self dunks on Dennis Rodman, or workout show “Blast Off! ” ends with violent regurgitation. Chaos consumes, calamity keeps Ralph from embracing his problems, but its all unavoidable in the end. Ralphs journey is complete, somehow, despite the billion subplots created through channel surfing. At times, VHYes feels like flipping through a TV Guide written by Mad TV staffers. Other glimpses are that of a sincere look into unexpected change and lifes unsuspecting blows. Further yet, Jack Henry Robbins begs us to throw our phones into a lockbox every so often in hopes well see the beauty of simple moments, unfiltered or touched-up by digital enhancements. VHYes can overwhelm, like a sensory bomb blasting subplot shrapnel every which way. Still, in concept and production, I respect this crazy little slice of personal growth that sticks to its old-school identity without sacrificing meaningful catharsis. Movies, ‘VHYes Review: Channel Surfing and Self-Soothing This visually exhausting parody of 1980s late-night television offers little more than a collage of meaningless nostalgia. Credit. Oscilloscope “VHYes” is barely 72 minutes long, but thats just one reason this outlandish picture barely qualifies as a feature. For one thing, its almost halfway through before anything approximating a story emerges; even then, its such a pale, sickly thing youd be forgiven for thinking you had imagined it. Set at the tail end of 1987 and shot entirely on VHS and Betamax tape — a gimmick your eyeballs are unlikely to appreciate — this rough, at times sophomoric comedy from Jack Henry Robbins shoots for satire and lands mostly on inanity. Unfolding as a series of fragmented sketches apparently strung together at random, the movie forces us to watch as 12-year-old Ralph (Mason McNulty) uses his new camcorder — and his parents wedding video — to tape his late-night channel surfing. Absent any clear through line, these rapid-fire, faux-retro vignettes are visually exhausting and, after a time, deeply aggravating. Their authentic ugliness cannot be overstated (as those who recall this chaotic period in after-hours television will attest) and their jokes mostly lack punch or punch lines. Spoofs of sitcoms, infomercials and true-crime shows crash into one another, buffered by forlorn snippets of the original wedding tape and clips of Ralphs interactions with his best friend, Josh (Rahm Braslaw. Occasionally, a parody is given time to land. A riff on “Antiques Roadshow, ” featuring Mark Proksch as its spectacularly ignorant host, is amusingly dumb; and a segment with Charlyne Yi as a geeky music fan, broadcasting shows from her parents basement, perfectly nails the twin public-access vibes of enthusiasm and ineptness. Mostly, though, the movie feels like an excuse to recycle material from Robbinss earlier comedy shorts: “Hot Winter” — a pornographic look at climate science — and the charmingly weird “Painting With Joan, ” featuring the divine Kerry Kenney as a P. B. S. -style artist with Dennis-Rodman-related sexual fantasies. Even when the ghost of a point materializes — that recording ephemera can be a self-soothing behavior — “VHYes” is too unsophisticated to develop it. Instead, it offers agonizingly derivative social commentary from an author (played by Mona Lee Wylde) who views our relentless taping as precipitating mankinds demise. Her predictions veer from the preposterous (crops will remain untended while farmers film their cows) to the clichéd (a celebrity will be president. None of them are funny. Little more than a collage of meaningless nostalgia, “VHYes” makes you wonder how it found its way into a movie theater. Though Im sure that has nothing to do with the fact that two of its actors, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, are also the directors parents. VHYes Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 12 minutes.

Watch Now ▶️ ▶️ Download Now ▶️▶️ “VHYes” For a semi-retired super assassin whos killed more people than the Bubonic plague, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is actually a pretty relatable guy. Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the byzantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, hes just a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left the fuck alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculous saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wifes death in peace — then some Russian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute. This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangerous that he used to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers hed once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they havent lost the scent or minded their own business. At the end of “VHYes, ” our laconic hero committed a big no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what its like when the world gets a bit too close for comfort. Giddy, exhausting, and breathtakingly violent, “VHYes” begins a few seconds after the previous installment left off, with the excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart hes been given to hide before the 14 million bounty on his head is triggered and the entire criminal underworld comes after him. Of course, anyone whos seen the previous films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? —? is a heat-packing hired gun who uses their role in the capitalist system as a disguise for their deeper allegiance to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood oaths. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all of those crosshairs, its become comically impossible for the deathless widower to find the solace he seeks. Hes a target, and it seems like the entire world has its finger on the trigger; he used to be anonymous, but now hes a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parabellum” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famous. Less artful but more concussive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick being clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and so desperate for someone who will treat him like an actual human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth he can hide in plain sight, and the perks of his job dont seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles through the wet neon streets of Times Square — returning us to a surprisingly involved film world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? —? its hard not to think of Reeves recent experience on a malfunctioning airplane, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a viral moment (to the actors mild chagrin. Reeves once said that Wick was 40% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “VHYes” starts in media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For an 131-minute film that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who isnt up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parabellum, ” hes basically the leading cause of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”) Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie. Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building) “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesnt live up to Stahelskis creative potential, even if its amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect — is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old stars remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywoods stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. To that end, its telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, theres mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “VHYes” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type whos a bit too greedy for his own good (its hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but hes most definitely doing it. When the bullets fly, Sofias very VHYes lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wicks past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that youre willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th streets United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater, ” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake. ” Stream Free Movies & TV Show The films world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelskis frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wicks bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and youll have the right idea. Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator whos covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld thats sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they dont shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 wont matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesnt matter if youre a Hollywood star or a 14 million bounty — fame can be a difficult thing to shake. Its a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it. The song of names movie plot. The song of names/theaters. A young violinist goes missing in London in 1951. The eventual answer as to why is powerful. Credit. Sabrina Lantos/Sony Pictures Classics The Song of Names Directed by François Girard Drama PG-13 1h 53m More Information “The Song of Names” begins with a disappearance: In 1951, David Eli Rapoport, a violinist of around 21, is set to make a splash on the London stage. Born in Poland as Dovidl, Rapoport was, as a child, left in the care of a gentile London family that respected his Judaism and nurtured his talent. They prepared him for a life as a virtuoso. What could possibly cause him to skip his debut? It says much for “The Song of Names” that the eventual answer is powerful enough to be convincing (although it seems less plausible that Dovidl would stay vanished for 35 years. Based on a novel by the classical music critic Norman Lebrecht, and directed by François Girard (“The Red Violin”) the film alternates between two timelines. Decades after Dovidls disappearance, Martin (Tim Roth) raised alongside him like a brother, encounters a young violinist who has Dovidls habit of kissing the rosin before playing. Martins pursuit of that clue is intercut with flashbacks to the boys upbringing. We learn of their mutual devotion and of their pronounced differences, and of Dovidls growing loss of hope for his familys survival. (Martin is played in succession by Misha Handley and Gerran Howell; Dovidl by Luke Doyle and a superb Jonah Hauer-King, and then, in the Roth time frame, by Clive Owen. There is much to admire in the fluidity of Girards storytelling, in the music (Ray Chen did the violin solos) and in the complicated questions raised about social obligations. Still, the movie never quite justifies the contrivance of its puzzle-box construction. Parlaying this material into an arty whodunit cheapens the real history invoked. The Song of Names Rated PG-13. Disturbing wartime scenes. Running time: 1 hour 53 minutes.

The song of names howard shore. The song of names (2019. Look interesting. Me want see. But concerned me species portayed as stereotype. 3 hours of wide angle catechism. In short, a Terrence Malick film. The song of names soundtrack. Greetings again from the darkness. The title refers to a sacred Jewish ritual where the names of the Holocaust victims are recited in a musical style. It's a process that (sadly) covers a few days. In this film, it takes on a personal, as well as historical, significance. British cultural affairs expert Norman Lebrecht wrote the 2001 novel on which writer-director Francois Girard (THE RED VIOLIN, 1998, plus plays, operas and 2 Cirque de Soleil shows) and co-writer Jeffrey Caine based the film.
We open in 1951 London just minutes before the scheduled performance of young violin virtuoso Dovidl "David" Rapoport. He is to play Bruch and Bach in a concert sponsored by his "adoptive" father figure Gilbert Simmonds, who has sunk his entire life savings into producing the concert. Despite the assurances of Simmonds' son Martin, who has become like a brother to David, the featured performer is a no-show. leading Martin to search for him over the next 35 years.
The film covers the story from the time Dovidl's Polish-Jewish father (played by Jakub Kotynski) agrees to his leave 9 year old, a violin prodigy, with the non-Jewish Simmonds in an attempt to protect the boy from the German invasion of Poland in the late 1930's. As Dovidl and Martin grow together, their bond become stronger. Martin is present when Dovidl renounces Judaism, even as becomes more proficient with his instrument and more saddened by the Holocaust that he avoided in his home country.
Both boys are played at three different ages by three different actors. Dovidl is played by Luke Doyle at ages 9-13, Jonah Hauer-King at ages 17-23, and by Clive Owen in middle age. Martin is played by Misha Handley at ages 9-13, Gerran Howell at ages 17-23, and by Tim Roth in later life. The actors do a good job of capturing Martin's early irritation at Dovidl's arrogance, the shock of the no-show betrayal, and the later in life man who changed everything when he found out about his family, as well as the music teacher so desperate to find his long lost friend/brother.
The film bounces between the three timelines so that we have a full picture of the impact they have had on each other's lives, and how Dovidl's disappearing act was quite devastating. Much of the film centers on Martin tracking down leads and talking to folks for some idea of the path taken by Dovidl. Mr. Roth is especially effective (and surprisingly understated) in his performance as a man haunted by the unexplained actions of a loved one. His wife, played by Catherine McCormick, is simultaneously understanding, patient, and emotionally affected.
Stanley Townsend plays Martin's father. He cares for Dovidl as if her were a son, and provides what's necessary for the prodigy to develop and be groomed for performance. Three-time Oscar winner Howard Shore delivers a score that follows the good times and bad, not an easy task for a family drama within the shadow of the Holocaust. One specific sequence stands out, and it is filmed on the hallowed grounds of Treblinka - now a memorial, where the extermination camp once stood.
There are many facets to the story, and most involve heavy emotions. We see children bearing more than they should. Parents protecting their children in times of crisis. The difference between religion and ethnicity is discussed. Broken trust proves especially damaging. Dovidl's disappearing act could be compared to that of JD Salinger, in that he seemingly disappeared for years. And maybe most of all, the idea of survivor's guilt is a theme, as Dovidl explains, You don't have to be guilty to feel guilty." The film may have some pacing issues, but it affords such a wealth of conversation topics, that any flaws are easily forgiven.

The Song of names new. The song of names spoiler. F: on the journey. A Sony Pictures Classics Release Synopsis Tim Roth and Clive Owen star in François Girard's (The Red Violin) sweeping historical drama, about a man searching for his childhood best friend – a violin prodigy orphaned in the Holocaust – who vanished decades before on the night of his first public performance. About Testimonial About The Production TESTIMONIAL "Can a film be both heartbreaking and heart-healing at the same time? The Song of Names is a triumphant combination of history, artistry, and deep pathos. Some few stories help us comprehend the enormity of the losses, the astonishing resilience and the creative passion that marked a peoples darkest time. Song of Names is such a story, tracing a haunting melody that carries us far beyond words to a soul stirring climax. In an age of forgetfulness and coarse cruelty, when the slogans of hate reappear throughout the globe, The Song of Names is a gripping and vital contribution: a reminder of all that was lost, all that remained, and all that remains to be done. A film of broken friendship that devastates then uplifts, and finally, gives us back our faith. " – Rabbi David Wolpe is the Max Webb Senior Rabbi of Sinai Temple in Los Angeles. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION As the first Gulf War was ending in 1991, Norman Lebrecht, a British commentator on classical music, was about to fly from Liverpool to Los Angeles. “There was a war on another continent, and it gave me an overwhelming sense of fragility, ” he says. “I had an idea about lives being unsettled by larger historic events. And the particular idea I had was: What if a man is so close to another person that they have an almost symbiotic connection—and that person suddenly disappears? How do you continue your life with only half a functioning self? You can lose a part of yourself and spend your whole life looking for it. ” As he continued to think about this idea over the coming years, it developed into his first novel, The Song of Names. The two halves of one soul that Lebrecht created in the novel were Martin, son of a modest music publisher, Gilbert Simmonds, and a Polish Jewish violin prodigy, Dovidl Rapoport, that Martins father invites to live in their home. “The day before Dovidl came along, if you asked Martin what he was, he would have said ‘ordinary, ” says Lebrecht. “When Dovidl arrives, Martins ordinariness ceases. When Dovidl disappears, Martin suffers two losses: the loss of his father, which he blames on Dovidl, and the loss of whatever lit Martin up from the inside and made him feel not ordinary. All this lives within Martin as slow-burning anger, the hope against hope that something will be resolved and that when its resolved, there will be rage. ” For Lebrecht, The Song of Names is about coping with loss. “Its something that happens to all of us in our lives, ” he says. “Do we then allow loss to paralyze us? Do we allow loss to leave us living half lives or half-hearted lives? Or are we able to, in some way or another, adjust to loss, and find a way to overcome that thing, however terrible it is? ” As THE SONG OF NAMES is set within the world of music and musicians, producer Robert Lantos saw François Girard (THE RED VIOLIN, THIRTY TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD) as an ideal director. “This film lives or dies on the emotional impact of its music, ” says Lantos. “I thought it wouldnt be enough to have a terrific film director who just left the music to the composer. It had to be someone who is as familiar with the language of classical music as he is with the language of cinema, so he could work with a composer from a place of knowledge and conviction. And that led me to François. He directs opera, theatre, and Cirque du Soleil shows. I doubt there are many other filmmakers in the world who are as comfortable and familiar with classical music as he is. ” Despite his passion for music, Girard didnt want the films emphasis to be on music and the artistic temperament, as he felt it had been in Lebrechts novel: “Music is a very important vehicle in tackling this story, but to me this is not a film about music, ” he says. “This is an intimate story of two brothers, in which the undercurrents of the Holocaust and the memory of those that disappeared, gradually emerges. I made sure at all times that the music was always serving that, and never the reverse. ” Six actors play the principal roles of Martin and Dovidl, in different stages of their lives: as boys, adolescents, and middle-aged adults (Tim Roth and Clive Owen. “Were following characters from 9 to 55, which turns out to be my age and pretty much Clive and Tims age, ” says Girard. “The first period in the script goes from age 9 to about 21. You can't have the same actor play 9 and 21. You need a child and then a young man. And then, when you connect with the characters 35 years later, you need yet another pair of actors. ” Finding the right mix was a big challenge for Girard and casting directors Kirsty Kinnear, Susie Figgis, and Pam Dixon. “If you have Tim Roth and Clive Owen, you have to find the middle Tim and Clive and then the young ones, ” says Girard. “Whenever we moved a piece, the whole puzzle would shift. It took us more than a year to make sure we were making the right casting choices. ” The casting of these roles was pivotal, because the impact of Martins quest to find Dovidl rests on the depth of the relationship forged between the boys in their early years as evoked in the film. “I did everything possible to invest in that relationship with love, ” says Girard. “Love would be the key word. That way, the disappearance of Dovidl would be that much more charged. ” Luke Doyle, who plays Dovidl from age 9 to 13, is a violin prodigy himself, but unlike the other members of the cast, he was cast for his experience as a virtuoso violinist, and had no prior experience as an actor. “If a young person is already in touch with his emotions performing music, you can expect that he will be able to express his emotions with acting, ” says Girard. The director eventually found a musical process for communicating with Doyle, which sometimes meant literally conducting him: “Id give him a tempo, give him a flow, much like a conductor does with musicians, using my body and my arms to keep the rhythms of the text flowing through a scene. And Luke, being the brilliant young artist he is, reacted to that really well. ” Luke Doyle found young Dovidl to be a fascinating character to play. “There are not too many people out there who are like Dovidl, ” he says. “He never does anything boring, and that always makes him the center of attention. His arrogance and confidence is quite gravitational. At the same time he can sometimes be quite selfish, and doesnt really care about others. ” Doyle also perceives hidden vulnerability in Dovidl: “In the first few scenes, it feels as if Martin is the one who cant control his emotions, but as the story progresses and the two get to know each other, the tables turn and you begin to realize that its actually Dovidl who cant control his emotions, and for good reason. ” Misha Handley plays young Martin, who at first sees Dovidl as an unwanted invader in his house. “When Dovidl comes into his room and they are alone for the first time, Martin tries to establish dominance, but Dovidl just naturally takes up the space, ” says Handley. “He is clearly better than Martin at most things. The two despise each other after that first contact, especially on Martins side, but after certain events, the bond forms, and they become incredibly close, like blood brothers. ” Handley recognized that underneath Martins exterior, there are more complicated feelings brewing. “You take another look and you realize there is this darkness in the background. Martin loves Dovidl, but at the same time theres this hatred, theres this jealousy. ” When we meet Dovidl at 17, as Jonah Hauer-King begins to play him, he has lived in the UK for quite a few years and hes assimilating with his surroundings and his new family. “He has begun the journey, consciously or subconsciously, away from his Polish-Jewish identity, ” says Hauer-King. “ Its a time of great change because a lot of his identity was connected to his parents and to his family and the mystery surrounding what happened to them. ” By this point in the story a very specific dynamic has been formed in Dovidl and Martins relationship. “Dovidl is talented, flamboyant, precocious, self-centered, and ambitious, and Martin is the one who tries to keep him grounded and act as a rock. They are both playing roles within that brotherhood. Dovidl doesnt articulate it much, but I think he has a huge love and respect for Martin for putting up with him, as he can be quite difficult to be around. ” Gerran Howell, who takes over the role of Martin at 17, believes Martin is content to play his deferential role. Dovidl is the genius and Martin is the admirer, ” says Howell. “Martin sees himself as quite a boring person with not much of an outlook or freedom in his life. When Dovidl came along, he turned everything on its head. He was everything Martin wanted to be. They kind of fill each others things that theyre missing. But when Dovidl disappears, Martin is left to pick up the pieces and wonder what hes meant to do next. ” At the point we first encounter the adult Martin (Tim Roth) he is coasting through an essentially dull and passionless life. “Martin is living in a crumbling house with his wife, with not much money in the bank, ” says Roth. “His foster brother Dovidl, who was his best friend, vanished on him 35 years before. All of that comes tumbling back when he catches wind that Dovidl might still be around. That charges up his life again, and he goes looking for him. ” From that moment on, Martins quest to find Dovidl becomes the force driving the films narrative. “When Martin sees the first clue, his passion is awakened, ” says Girard. “It transforms him from a state of drifting around to being driven by a mission. ” In the novel, both Dovidl and Martins families are Jewish, but Roth suggested that Martin not be Jewish. “For people on the outside, its a hidden world, ” says Roth. “If Martin is Jewish, he would already know where to look, in a sense. So I think it gives me more to explore. ” Screenwriter Jeffrey Caine liked Roths idea. “It adds another strand to the film, ” says Caine. “It gives Martin another cause for resentment. Not only is this kid now his father's golden boy, they also have to live a kosher life. ” During the decades since the two men had last seen each other, Dovidl has changed drastically from the young man Martin once knew. “There is a huge gap in the story, ” says Clive Owen, who plays the adult version of Dovidl. “There is a world, a life thats happened that we dont see, that we never see because his life has changed so dramatically. Their coming together is hugely important because Martin has spent his entire life wondering why this guy just disappeared without a word when they were very close and had done so much together. Dovidl made a decision 35 years ago to create a new life and now he has to face up to the past. ” Catherine McCormack portrays Martins wife Helen. “Helen is very much in love with Martin, as he is with her, ” says McCormack. “But Martins obsession with understanding and finding out where his friend went has taken over his life. He really needs to find the answers and for Helen thats very difficult because she has a secret herself in relation to Dovidl. But, beyond that, its causing problems in their marriage because she feels like theres a third person, a presence that is not physically there, but is always a part of their everyday language. And shes tired of it. She feels shes in a marriage with three people. ” Martins quest for Dovidl begins when, while judging a competition, he recognizes a unique stylistic flourish used by a young violinist, Peter Stemp (Max Macmillan) that could only have been taught to the boy by Dovidl. While the novel could reveal in words what Martin was thinking, screenwriter Jeffrey Caine did not feel there was a way to convey this vital piece of information to a film audience. Instead, Caine invented a physical action: Stemp slowly applies rosin to his bow (something no concert violinist would do on stage) and delicately kisses the block of rosin. As we eventually learn, the cake of rosin had a profound meaning for Dovidl, as it was a parting gift from his father, the last time he saw him. While its unstated in the film, this reverent gesture is something Dovidl would have constantly witnessed growing up in an Orthodox home, where holy objects like the siddur (prayer book) mezuzah on doorpost, tallis (prayer shawl) are traditionally kissed as a symbol of loyalty to Judaism and God. This simple gesture with the rosin ties Dovidl simultaneously to his father, family, and Jewish identity. Years after Dovidls disappearance, young Peter Stemp takes Martin to meet Billy (Richard Bremmer) the street violinist from whom he picked up Dovidls gesture. Billy tells Martin that Dovidl told him in 1951 that he was going home to “play for the ashes. ” These words mean nothing to Billy, but are enough to convince Martin that Dovidl left London for Poland. Martin flies to Warsaw and seeks out Weschler, a once-dashing virtuoso violinist whom Martin and Dovidl had known when they were young. Martin finds the now decrepit Weschler, listless and unresponsive, in a lunatic asylum. While Martin is unable to get Weschler to remember him, a nurse informs Martin that Weschler is visited once a year by a woman. Martin tracks down the woman, Anna Wozniak (Magdalena Cielecka) who was Dovidls lover during his brief stay in Poland. Anna tells Martin that Dovidl twice played a special song on his violin, which he never allowed her to hear: once for Weschler in the asylum, and another time on the field where the Treblinka Death Camp once stood. Dovidl referred to his Treblinka performance as “playing for the ashes. ” Anna takes Martin to Treblinka, where there is now a memorial garden, filled with hundreds of stone slabs. Afterwards, Anna tells Martin where Dovidl went after he left Poland. THE SONG OF NAMES was the first feature film to receive permission to shoot on the Treblinka memorial. Eight hundred thousand or more people were killed on that site in a period of nine months. “Ive spent my adult life avoiding going to extermination camps, ” says Lantos, the son of Holocaust survivors. “I dont think most people would want to go to hell on earth. I didnt want to and I never would have if I werent making this film, but the alternative would have been to build it somewhere in a field, and I really didnt want to do that. I thought it was essential that we film there. ” At the center of Treblinka is a large irregular shaped rock, engraved with two words, in several languages: “Never Again. ” Says Lantos: “For me, those two words encapsulate the most important reason a film like this needs to be made. ” Everyone involved in the film shared this conviction. “One problem in society now is the general amnesia, ” says Girard. “Fifty percent of people under thirty dont even know what the word Holocaust means, and those who do know what the word means, you can be certain wouldnt be able to explain much. So its definitely a mission for this film to keep that memory alive, to keep those events meaningful and resonant. ” Screenwriter Caine, whose parents died in the Holocaust, says: “I deplore genocide wherever it occurs and to whomever it occurs. Im with the Armenians, the Tutsis, the people Pol Pot murdered in Cambodia, and whoever might be genetically or racially cleansed tomorrow. Whatever words people use to describe it, this is a process thats ongoing in the human mind, and this film isnt going to eradicate it. But the more aware we all are of that thing in human beings that makes them act like this, the better. We have to know about it in order to recognize what the dangers are for the human race. ” Before shooting, François Girard visited the Treblinka Memorial, along with actress Magdalena Cielecka and production designer François Seguin. “It was a very emotional experience, ” says Girard. “We entered and for two hours we didnt say a single word. There was nothing to say. ” The experience affected Girard deeply and caused him to make an important change in the scene. “In the script the characters were talking as they walked there, and this no longer seemed right. I went back and worked with Jeffrey Caine so that Martin and Anna would remain silent. ” The core of the films story is the titular “Song of Names, ” a recitation of the names of all who perished at Treblinka, set to music. It is through this song, chanted in a London synagogue by an Orthodox Rebbe (Daniel Mutlu) that Dovidl finally hears what befell his family at Treblinka. Its significant that the names are not simply recited, but are sung like a prayer. “Music is a language, and it is probably the most powerful of all languages because it goes across borders with no need for translations, ” says Girard. “It talks to the heart with no intermediaries, and it says things that words cant say, because its a place where we meet and that no other medium can provide. ” Soon after learning the fate of his family through “The Song of Names, ” Dovidl, who had once renounced his religion, goes to the opposite extreme and dedicates his life to Orthodox Judaism. He also pledges to write a violin version of “The Song of Names. ” The practice of remembrance through sung prayers is deeply rooted in Jewish tradition back to ancient times. The specific idea of “The Song of Names” on which the film is based was conceived by author Norman Lebrecht. “The Song of Names” and the violin theme heard in the movie is an original work by composer Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) based on traditional modes. Drawing on his own experience from growing up in the synagogue, Shore spent two years studying the cantorial tradition using early recorded audio but particularly recordings from the 1950s, when the song is first heard in the film. Shore received particular guidance in recapturing the Jewish liturgical tradition by famed conductor/educator Judith Clurman and Bruce Ruben, who is Cantor of the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue. Girard maintains that Shores contribution went beyond music. “Howard was a contributor to the script, because there are a lot of ideas that I developed and discussed with him, which were ultimately implemented into the script, ” says Girard. “For instance, the final concert, where you have a converging of Dovidls three performances of ‘The Song of Names—with Weschler, at Treblinka, and on stage—as well as first hearing the Rebbe sing it, that was something I brought to the script and Howard embraced. ” By the time that Dovidl plays “The Song of Names” at the end, he has long shed the idea of performing for fame and fortune. “By that moment, its not so much about Dovidl demonstrating virtuosity, its more of a spiritual evocation, ” says Girard. “His music has become a vehicle of something bigger. Theres no fame, no money, no individuality, no ego involved. Its all about honoring the memory of those who had disappeared. ” All the same, Dovidls great gifts have not left him. “‘The Song of Names is a virtuoso piece, ” says Shore, “to be played by a master musician. ” All the violin parts in the performance of “The Song of Names, ” as well as young Dovidls virtuoso performances of such pieces as Henryk Wieniawskis “Variations on an Original Theme, Opus 15” (audition) and Niccolò Paganinis Caprice #9 and #24 (with Jozef in the bomb shelter) are performed by internationally acclaimed violinist Ray Chen. “Ray worked very closely with me, ” says Shore. “He delved into ‘The Song of Names with his heart and soul and created something that was really timeless. ” Daniel Mutlu, Senior Cantor at Manhattans Central Synagogue, sang the part of the Rebbe live on camera. “That scene could only be recorded live on set says Shore. Daniel had to perform it and feel the pain. ” Shores soundtrack for the film weaves melodic elements of “The Song of Names” from the films opening minutes until the songs reprise in the end credits. “I try to create a complete work when I write for a film, ” he says. Unlike Luke Doyle, Clive Owen and Jonah Hauer-King had no prior training with the violin, and had to go through extensive training with British violinist Oliver Nelson to make them appear convincingly like violin masters. “We put hours and hours and hours of work in, ” says Owen. “It was tough work because I was trying to do something that somebody would spend thirty years honing and getting as good as it should be. And I just had a couple of months. But François promised me that whatever happened he would make me look brilliant on the violin. So I trusted him and I put as much work in as I possibly could and then with great help from Ollie, he seemed to be happy. ” Hauer-King says that the particular training he received was project specific. “Im very good at playing one song, and nothing else, ” he says. “But it was a really great challenge and I enjoyed it. ” Principal photography for THE SONG OF NAMES took place over nine weeks in late 2018, starting with five days in London, followed by seven weeks of location and studio work in Budapest, Hungary, and a final week of location work in Montreal. Budapest can pass for many cities, but it has very distinctive Austro-Hungarian architecture that needed to be adapted by the Production Designer François Seguin (BROOKLYN) and his team to stand in for English locations. There were several occasions where quite substantial set builds were also required, notably the sand-bagged entrance to a World War II air raid shelter. The concert hall used for both the 1951 and 1986 scenes was the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, an Art Nouveau concert hall in Budapest located within Hungarys most prestigious music school. Although THE SONG OF NAMES is profoundly connected to the memory of those who perished during the Holocaust, there is actually very little direct portrayal of those events. “One reason I agreed to direct this film is that it deals with the Holocaust without looking at it straight in the eye, ” says Girard. “I dont think I could have done that. Watching THE SONG OF NAMES is like taking a walk on a volcano that is apparently quiet with its gardens and paths, but deep under theres red lava thats burning. Were looking at the Holocaust from the small end of the telescope, at characters who suffered the consequences of it, and through their eyes and through their lives, we evoke the tragedy. ” The story of THE SONG OF NAMES illustrates how the brutal forces of war and genocide can leave indelible marks on those who manage to survive those scourges. Still, while the story passes through unimaginable darkness, it doesnt end on a note of utter hopelessness. “There is a message in this story, that the things we lose, we dont always lose, ” says Lebrecht. “Things that we think are lost forever are deeply embedded inside us, and if we have the tenacity to go and look for them, we can start to understand loss as not total. We are able to build on what is left behind and move on. ” Cast Tim Roth Clive Owen Catherine McCormack Jonah Hauer-King Gerran Howell Luke Doyle Misha Handley Magdalena Cielecka Marina Hambro Tim Roth Martin TIM ROTH (Martin) made his studio feature debut in ROB ROY, opposite Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange, a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama. Decades later, his foster brother tries to find him, only to discover that their lives have been lived in the long shadow of the Holocaust. Release date January 10, 2020 Violence B Sexual Content B- Profanity C Substance Use Why is The Song of Names rated PG-13? The MPAA rated The Song of Names PG-13 for some strong language, brief sexual material, thematic elements, and smoking. Run Time: 113 minutes Parent Movie Review Its 1951 and Dovidl Rapoport (Jonah Hauer King) is on the cusp of greatness. The gifted young violinist has released a record to rapturous acclaim and his premiere concert has sold out. But as the orchestra and patrons shuffle in their seats, the star performer fails to appear. Dovs disappearance is devastating to his adopted English family. His Polish father (Jakub Kotynski) brought him to England prior to the war for safety and musical education and entrusted him to the care of music publisher Gilbert Simmonds (Stanley Townsend. Gilberts son, Martin (Misha Handley) and Dov (played as a child by Luke Doyle) are initially combative before becoming as close as brothers. But when his bankrupt and devastated father dies shortly after the abortive concert, Martin is left with grief, anger, and questions that wont rest. Thirty-five years later, a middle-aged Martin (Tim Roth) sees a young violinist follow the same pre-performance ritual as his erstwhile brother. Jolted into the past, Martin realizes that Dov must be alive and sets out on a journey through his memories and across the world to find him and solve the mystery of his disappearance. The Song of Names is a magnificent film; a poignant, eloquent story of love, grief, loss, and identity. All six actors who portray Dov and Martin across their life spans bring authenticity and passion to their roles. And Howard Shores deeply emotional musical score gives the film a soul that breathes, sings, and weeps. This is not a story that will leave viewers unmoved. It peers deeply into the core of our humanity: our love for family, our need to belong, the strength of community, and the power and dignity that come from the remembrance of those weve lost. Given the films subject, parents will be relieved to note that negative content is comparatively minor and sanitized. Although World War II and the Holocaust are critical themes in the story, no graphic violence appears on screen. The effects of these horrific events are the central theme of the movie, which is permeated with loss and grief. Some parents may object to the playing cards with naked women on them, which are briefly seen, or to the three sexual expletives that comprise the films swearing. And they might be unhappy with the shows ubiquitous smoking, especially when the boys sneak off to smoke cigarettes. But none of this content is extreme and this movie is certainly suitable for most teens. In fact, The Song of Names isnt just suitable for teens, its exactly the kind of film they should see. In its unsparing look at the price of hate; in its deep dive into the dark well of anguish and grief, this movie has the ability to help teens develop empathy for those who suffer. And hopefully it can inspire all of us to say “never again” and commit to building a world where weaponized hate and its bitter fruits are inconceivable. Directed by Francois Girard.
