Adam Sandler was incredible in this film. 1:42 You feel like you want to just. GRAAAAAGHHHHHHH. Like dude wtf this is a movie review, not an explanation of you on your toilet yesterday. Uncut gems credits song. Just finished watching it and I’m baffled. Why doesn’t he partake in more movies like this? I actually think he’s a great actor, just picked a lot of bad movies tbh. This was so frenetic omg, all the fast walking, the screaming, the transporting lots of cash or a thick ass diamond, kept me off my seat from start to finish. The Academy is sleeping on this guy. Is sleeping on this movie entirely.

Primarily because it's not a special effect to wow the audience, a layperson audience would never even know there was anything interesting about the scene to be impressed by. it would just be "correct". It appears to primarily be a tool for the cinematographer to get the shot exactly as planned in the first I can imagine is probably a pretty big deal to a movie production. level 2 As a non cinematographer can you please explain this hype ELI5 style? Article didny do much for me and im so curious now level 1 As a Camera Assistant, I'm happy this part of filmmaking is getting some shine. Nail focus shot after shot day after day, buy the first time you're a little fuzzy someone is yelling "SOFT! " from across the set level 2 As a porn actor i can relate level 2 Does thus technology worry you though, as basically it’s replacing this part of your job. level 1 skip to about the 42 minute mark to see the sandman talking about how the safdie bros worked with the cinematographer. level 2 Comment deleted by user 1 day ago ( More than 1 child) level 1 *how Darius Kondji kept a perpetually moving Adam Sandler in focus.... level 2 To go even further it’s more like how khondji’s first AC kept things in focus because he most likely selected the light ranger as the tool he wanted to use instead of a cinetape/focus but etc. level 2 How Chris Silano kept a perpetually moving Adam Sandler in focus level 2 Don't know why you're being downvoted, major props should be given to the cinematographer. level 2 *how an autofocus system kept a perpetually moving Adam Sandler in focus... this is nothing new level 1 This was such an exhausting movie to watch, and I enjoyed every second of it. There was a lot of skill on display both in front and behind the camera, and I would love to see Adam Sandler continue taking roles of this caliber.

Uncut gems stuckmann. Heard great things and was excited to watch. br> From the beginning it was annoyingly loud with the intro music blaring, yet the screaming seemed to drown the music out. The movie progressed with no real back story or any character build whatsoever. The only emotion I had was I disliked every character in the movie.
The wasn't a storyline and the main characters came and went with no rhyme or reason why. The movie was set about 10 years ago I'm guessing based on the nba games and athletes shown. Kevin Garnett clearly is not an actor, yet had a supporting role.
Bottom line, the movie was all over the place with no real direction. The only reason I left somewhat satisfied was the ending.
Anyone who rated this movie above a 5 or 6 needs their head examined. If you don't believe me, what it for yourself. then come back, read my review and remember, I TOLD YOU SO.

When 2:28 comes theres something about that tune in the movie that made me process everything that just happened, and I felt sad, sick, and relieved all at the same time. Lopatins score w/ the synth, xylophones, the organs, just everything about the score completely and perfectly encapsulated everything in the movie alongside Howie. If anything Id say the music is the supporting character of the film. So mesmerizing and memorable.

That's the best description of what happened at the ending that I've ever read. And Arno did share his euphoria. It was the guy in light blue that wasn't putting up with Howard's bullshit. Arno was fine with it. Arno was ready to forgive, get paid back, and forget. Arnos associate in light blue took Howard's actions as personal disrespect, the worst thing you can do to a hardened criminal. Amazing write up, I loved this! level 2 Yeah, you get this impression that Phil is increasingly fed up with Howard's antics and the climax pushes him over the edge. My biggest question though is Phil's relationship to Arno and if it extends past Howard's debt. Has he loaned money to people before? Is this a usual thing for him? Or is he just a normal guy who's trying to get the money he loaned back from his asshole brother in law? What does Arno do that he needs goons? Or, is the ending an indication that he's never really hired goons before and made a bad judgement call? level 2 Yeah, Arno definitely did share it, when he cracks that smile at the end the audience finally starts believing Howard is gonna get away with it all, because his delusion really is that infectious. I think Howard lost "the gamble of life" so to speak because he took into account most variables but not all. Like he knew Arno would never kill him, so he could afford to piss him off, and he was right. Arno definitely wouldn't have killed him, it was a good bet. But he forgot about the variable that is pissing off a random goon of his to a breaking point. Like with any sports bet there's a thousand variables you can see and a million which you can't. His failure to take every possibility into account is the reason Howard Ratner loses the "gamble" he made by imprisoning Arno, and the reason he gets shot. level 1 I read an interesting take on this (that I fully buy) that the line is a reflection of how diasporic communities are often forced into precarious positions and have to make big risks for potential rewards, with an attendant risk of danger and failure. The film is definitely aware of this as evidenced by Garnett's rant about how Howard is profiting off the backs of poor African miners that didn't get fairly compensated for finding the opal relative to its value. Howard's rant afterwards is his attempt to turn the tables back on Garnett and show him that they're actually on the same team, so to speak. I think the connection being drawn here is between Africans in America and Jews globally, two groups who have been forced into mass migration and who have been heavily discriminated against in their new "homes". According to an interview by the Safdies, at one point they wanted Amar'e Stoudemire to be the central basketball player in the film which made this point even more explicit since he's black and identifies as a Hebrew Israelite. I also think Howard is far more sympathetic than you make him out to be, for many of the reasons I just talked about. I think the Safdies described Howard (and many of their main characters) as "winners who can't stop losing". Howards wins both of the insane parlay bets he makes throughout the film, but ends up losing anyways. I really think you're supposed to sympathize with Howard because he can't catch a break anywhere. At least I did! He's a fuckup and an addict, if that's not relatable to you then you probably aren't relatable to me. level 2 This is a really well written and thoughtful reply. level 2 Original Poster 18 points · 5 days ago · edited 5 days ago I definitely relate to Howard, but he's still a bad person who neglects and endangers his children and only loves his girlfriend when he's winning (he even tries to get back with his wife in this movie at one point) level 2 He is a fuck up and an addict but I found it very difficult to sympathize with him because he didn’t really have any endearing or intriguing quality about the character. There was also no growth in his character. Some of my favourite movies of all time deal with awful People like in raging bull and there will be blood, but as flawed as they were, they were fascinating. I didn’t find anything fascinating about Howard at all. I did feel bad for him at the end but I also found him very irritating and frustrating. level 2 No he's a shitty dad and husband, and person in general. The real genius was making me root for him, despite all that. level 2 Comment deleted by user 5 days ago ( More than 1 child) level 1 IMO Howard's end is not a tragedy. Howard goes out feeling the best way he's ever gonna feel. There is no future for Howard Ratner, and even if there was, it's way more depressing then getting shot in the head. His wife is definitely leaving him, and probably taking the kids. He will eventually over-extend himself and lose his shop, and his career. But these things truly matter to Howard. All that matters is winning, and he won. He won bigger than he ever won before, and would ever win again. Sure, he doesn't get to enjoy the money, but we already saw that Howard doesn't really care about money except as a means to gamble, and win more money. level 2 Iunno- Julia Fox really does love him and in his own way he loves her. They could've been happy together level 2 That's how I felt as well. Thoughout the film I'm thinking sweet jesus, this man is a danger to himself and to others and I'm praying no one gets hurt, but I know deep down the proverbial house always wins. The ending was the best case scenario for Howard, the ultimate petit mort. level 2 And while the shop is robbed, presumably his family would get some sort of insurance coverage plus the bet would also go to someone he’s related to, right? So it’s not like they’re financially ruined because of Ratner’s continuous meddling and extreme gambling. Losing their father is of course terrible, but maybe they’re also being spared the years of anguish a divorce and their father’s exposed infidelity would bring. His mistress is majorly negatively affected by his death though, since she won’t be entitled to anything, and is losing an apartment, a job and her lover (she legit loves him, given the extreme lengths she went to during the film). But more urgently, isn’t she going to continue to be in mortal danger by being stalked by the thugs who want cash? Is the family also possibly in danger by these same thugs? Ratner’s selfishness definitely leaves a wake of destruction, so his “winning” at the end might be short sighted given all the consequences. level 1 It truly shows the depravity and emotions there is behind his addiction, even though it all paid off for him of course. Howard is a broken man broken marriage overwhelmed with all the loose ends he leaves and desperately angry always. In all of this disappointment in his life, he redeems himself through something so many others try and fail at. That's often the root of addictions, when your life is lacking in areas and you need something to fill that hole and suddenly the only success you know is through your addiction, and a key factor to that is having compulsive engagement towards things relating to the addiction. But in our boys mind it's not the same because he has proven himself through it, like Garnett who maybe he sees might have a tough time with fame and glory of being in the NBA but his redemption comes from the game, a practiced skill with enough Luck to make it, "comparable" to Howards part in it. I think Adam Sandler did a fantastic job portaying such a flawed character (with his own style of comedy showing through of course, it was bound to happen) but in my mind it painted an odd portrait of gambling addicts because he was so lucky and winning everything, even though the surrounding lifestyle of his habits really caught up to him. When often gambling addiction leads to losing more and still being desperately addicted. Sidenote: I am v stoned and never posted to this sub, but really thought on the addiction part of the movie even though addiction is not something I know alot about or am close too?? But it sure made me think level 1 Because he naively believed his aggressors would share his euphoria. Not really? It was obviously not Arno's wish for Howard to die. But that's really the crux of the story at the surface level (without delving into metaphors and representations)... Howard is related to the main guy he owes money too. The whole situation reminds me of that arc in The Sopranos when Artie goes to Tony for a loan. Tony knows all the shitty parts of loansharking and doesn't want to see that happen to his friend. Arno should have known better than to let his obviously addicted brother-in-law borrow money from him, because he knows he can't really hurt him or use a lot of the conventional methods to force Howard to pay. Eventually this causes his goons to lose faith in him. Edited: It appears I was under the false impression Arno was also a bookie, I guess i just assumed when he stopped the first bet and had his own goons. Actually, now that I think about it, this whole thing makes me see Arno in a different light. What if he's not some hardcore gangster loan shark or bookie, but just some guy who loaned $100k to his asshole brother in law and is trying to get it back? He pays some goons to go shakedown Howard for the money, but in the end, he winds up in over his head along with Howard. level 2 I don’t think Arno is Howard’s bookie. Howard borrows the $100, 000 for the opal from Arno, he places his bets with the guy in the restaurant.

Meh, I think because Netflix doesn’t show their movies internationally at all. Because they only need to show for two weeks in America to qualify for the Oscars. It’s not your cinema’s “fault”. Also they wouldn’t make that much money from revenue if it’s available on Netflix at the same time, which is much cheaper considering. You overestimate the interest because you’re probably seeing only from this sub/cinephiles’ opinion, but trust me the general audience couldn’t care less. They wouldn’t watch a 3 hour movie, or another movie about divorce with Black Widow this time, or a Sandler movie because he’s comedic and usually bad, right? Uncut gems the weeknd.
