Podrijetlom iz imućne obitelji praškog Jevreja. Radi liječenja putovao u Njemačku, Italiju, Francusku, Švicarsku. Umro od tuberkuloze grla. Kafka je odredio da se njegova knjievna ostavština nakon smrti spali, ali ju je njegov prijatelj M. Brod ipak objavio. Neprestano pod pritiskom i u tjeskobi, poslušan sin autorativnog oca, bolesnik i osamljenik, Kafka već u svojim prvijencima otkriva motive i ideje koje će ga mučiti cijeloga ivota. Neki se početnčki fragmenti ili prvobitne pripovijesti javljaju kasnije kao dijelovi romana ili kao nove, prerađene cjeline pokazujući tematski i misaoni kontinuitet. Kafka obogaćuje ekspresionizam svojevrsnom zagonetnom simbolikom i aforističkim izrazom. Kafkin svijet nije više onaj klasičnog realističkog romana; likovi su podvrgnuti metodi redukcije sve dok od njih ne ostane golo bezumlje. Njegov čovjek je usamljen i uplašen, dio mehanizma čiji mu je sastav nepoznat, a sustav nedohvatljiv. Kafkin pesimizam, koji prelazi u potpunu nemoć pred višim silama i u nihilizam, često prati crni humor, s elementima makabra i dvostruke perspektive. Osnova njegovog stila je jasan, aforističan izraz, dotjerane realističke pojedinosti, elementi vizija i fantastika. U krajnoj crti njegova metaforička proza ostavlja dojam sloene alegorije, za koju nema određenog racionalnog ključa, i svijet koji ona sadrava gubi se u beskonačnoj perspektivi alogičnosti, pa se autorove parabole otkrivaju kao zagonetka bez konačne odgonetke. Analiza likova: Otac Odnos oca prema svom sinu Gregoru je grub, on ga mrzi i ne smatra ga sinom. Takav odnos proizlazi iz Kafkina odnosa premasvom ocu. Otac Gregora tuče i ne pušta ga da uopće izađe iz kuće, ne pušta ga čakni iz sobe. Tako je bio grub da ga je gađaojabukama i jednom ga jepogodio u leđa, a poslije umire zbog toga. Majka Majka voli sina Gregora, ali ga se srami i stoga ga ne eli vidjeti. Ipak se na kraju dovoljno sabrala da bi išla k njemu. Tako je i onbio sretan, jer njemu je bilo dovoljno da čuje njihov glas da bi serazveselio. Greta Greta je jedina u obitelji koja stvarno voli Grogora, ona se brine zanjega, hrani ga i pomae mu kad god moe. Grogor je isto volionju i stoga mu je bilo ao što joj nije rekao o namjerama da juupiše u konzervatoriji, budući da je tako lijepo svirala. No i ona gapočinje zanemarivati… Tematika: Kafka u ovom djelu prikazuje otuđenost Gregora. On je čovjek, ali je sasvim drukčiji, različit i stoga ga nitko ne voli, cijela obitelj ga mrzi i hoće ga se riješiti tako da bi ih što manje osramotio. Jedino se sestra brine za njega. Unatoč svemu Gregor je usamljen jer osim sestre on nema nikoga, cijeli njegov svijet je mala soba iz koje nesmije izaći. Jako se bojao oca koji ga je mrzio i htio je učiniti bilo šta da bi ga se riješio. To se i dogodilo, on je bio krivac za njegovu smrt kad ga je pogodio jabukom u leđa. Mama ga je također voljela, ali upravo zbog toga ga njie eljela vidjeti jer nije podnijela sve to. Zaljučak: Kafkin je svijet apstraktan i abnormalan. Za njega sve što je normalno je anormalno. Okolni likovi u Kafkinim romanima smatraju junake funkcionare u obliku šahovskih figura. Međutim te figure ive u svojim nepojmljivim zakonitostima i umjesto da im koriste pripremaju im neodgodivi mat. Svijet u kome je Kafka vođen i u kome je on ivio jest onaj Staroga zavjeta. On je taj svijet napustio, ali ga se nije riješio, transponirao ga je u svoje vrijeme, zapravo ga je učinio bezvremenskim. Posebna značajka svijeta Starog zavjeta jest apsolutni suverenitet boji. The turning explained. Pripovetka “Preobraaj” napisana je 1912. godine, a prvi put je izdana 1915. godine u Lajpcigu. Uz roman “ Proces “, jedno je od najpoznatijih dela Franca Kafke. Pripada ekspresionističko-nadrealističkoj knjievnoj struji koju je Kafka personalizovao do te mere da se u kasnijoj teoriji knjievnosti pominje “kafkijanski ugođaj”. U Kafkinom delu “Preobraaj” prisutna je atmosfera nesigurnosti, straha, teskobe, nalik teškom i mučnom snu iz kojeg se nikako ne moe probuditi. Oko likova je isprepletena mrea paradoksa iz koje se nikako ne mogu razrešiti i logički spoznati. Ova pripovetka bez prevelikog objašnjavanja započinje objašnjenjem zašto se glavni lik Gregor Samsa pretvorio u kukca. U delu je prisutno nekoliko elemenata. To su elementi ekspresionizma u kojima se oseća strah, usamljenost, protest protiv društvenog mehanizma koji ugroava slobodu pojedinca i zahteva slepo pokoravanje. Elementi nadrealizma se odnose na neobične preobraaje i izmenjene stvarne odnose i halucinantne vizije. U “Preobraaju” se oseća egzistencijalna usamljenost bića, nemogućnost pronalaska mesta u društvu i ispunjenja samog sebe, strah od odgovornosti za vlastitu egzistenciju, nesigurnost, teskoba i uzaludno traganje za ostvarenjem vlastitog smisla. Fizička transformacija protagonista ovog dela sugeriše i unutarnju transformaciju prilagodbom na nove uvete ivota. Preobraaj koji je Gregor Samsa doiveo odraz je njegovog otuđenja prvo od vanjskog sveta, zatim od obitelji i na koncu od samoga sebe. Kroz celu pripovetku provlače se razni sukobi unutar porodice, strah, egzistencijalne borbe, mučnost ivljenja, otuđenje i osamljenost. Postoje tri teme u ovom delu. Jedna je fizička transformacija Gregora Samse kao rezultat otuđenja od samog sebe jer je već dugo iveo kao buba, duhovna transformacija Gregora Samse kao njegovo duhovno buđenje (sestrino sviranje na violini, pokušaj da sačuva sliku sa zida – svest o sebi kao duhovnom biću, ali sada te potrebe više ne moe ispuniti i transformacija Gregorove okoline – članovi njegove porodice koji su, dok se Gregor za njih brinuo bili lenji, statični i apatični, sada postaju aktivni, pokretni, snalaljivi, sposobni, na kraju izlaze u šetnju i planiraju budućnost. Vreme Gregorovog ivota pre preobraaja je dug period sa relativno malo događaja, proveden u automatizovanoj rutini. Zapravo taj celi period vodi prema fizičkoj transformaciji koja je samo manifestacija njegova duhovnog stanja; vreme nakon preobraaja – samo neposredno nakon preobraaja zadrava stari osećaj vremena (boji se kašnjenja, brine se kada će i kako nadoknaditi propušteno…), ali to vreme koje nuno određuje “normalan” ivot u Gregorovom novom ivotu postepeno gubi značenje i smisao – sada je vreme zaustavljeno u onim trenucima koji su vani njemu kao osobi, njegovom unutrašnjem svetu: premeštanje nameštaja, spašavanje slike sa zida kao spašavanje delića ljudskog sveta koji pokušava da mu se otme, pokušaj da pomogne onesvešćenoj majci, ranjavanje od strane oca, sestrino sviranje. Vrhunac Gregorovog ponienja je njegovo tuno i samotno umiranje i kraj kada završava na smetlištu kao da je i sam otpad i smeće; društvo – kako je bio nesposoban da nastavi da ispunjava svoje obaveze, brzo je bio zamenjen, a da se niko zaista nije zapitao ni zabrinuo šta se to Samsi dogodilo – društvo u kojem je iveo i radio počiva na iskorišćavanju slabijih, na strogoj i otuđenoj hijerarhiji koja se temelji na novcu i društvenom poloaju. Pomislio je kako bi mogao još malo odspavati i zaboraviti na sve, ali to je zbog njegovog novog izgleda bilo nemoguće. Prokurista je povišenim glasom zahtevao od Gregora da otvori vrata i objasni svima šta se dešava. Spomenuo je i to kako njegov poloaj u firmi više nije siguran jer šef nije zadovoljan uspehom, ili bolje reći neuspehom koji je Gregor postigao u poslednje vreme. Gregor se pravdao kako mu je bilo loše i da zbog toga nije mogao da ustane i da dođe na vreme na posao. Objašnjavao je kako će krenuti vozom koji polazi u osam časova i traio od prokurista da ga preporuči šefu. Dok je pričao, pokušavao je da dođe do vrata i otvori ih kako bi mogao da govori s prokuristom, a zanimalo ga je i to šta će da kau njegovi roditelji i sestra kada vide kako on sada izgleda. Naveče je neko otvorio i naglo zatvorio bočna vrata s jedne i druge strane sobe, a iako se Gregor namestio tik uz vrata ne bi li zaustavio i uveo posetioca na bilo koji način, vrata se više nisu otvarala. Kasno u noć je nakon gašenja svetiljke zaključio kako su njegovi roditelji i sestra bili budni celo vreme. Tada je bio siguran da više niko neće ulaziti u njegovu sobu pa je imao vremena za razmišljanje o tome kako da ispočetka uredi svoj ivot. Soba u kojoj se iveo pet godina odjednom mu je postala strašna, iako ni sam nije znao zbog čega, pa se zavukao pod sofu i tu ostao celu noć. Ujutro je u sobu stigla njegova sestra. Primetila je da nije pojeo kruh i mleko koje mu je donela noć prije pa je odnela zdelu i donela mu kosti koje su ostale od večere, trulo povrće i razne druge otpatke te zdelu s vodom. Znala je da Gregor neće jesti pred njom pa se brzo udaljila iz sobe. Ostaci hrane koje mu je sestra donela više su mu se sviđali nego svea hrana koju je imao navečer. Gregor nikada nije saznao pod kojom izlikom su njegovi roditelji onog dana otpremili bravara i lekara. Pokušavao je da sazna bilo kakve novosti pa je osluškivao šta se dešava u susednim prostorijama. Dva dana su razgovarali o tome kako bi se sada trebalo ponašati prema njemu, budući da ih je sluavka napustila, Greta i majka su morale preuzeti kuhanje. Otac je ubrzo detaljno pojasnio majci i sestri njihovo finansijsko stanje. Gregor je nekada poduzimao sve kako bi porodica što pre zaboravila poslovne nedaće koje su ih zadesile. Nekoć je zarađivao toliko novaca da je mogao da snosi troškove cele obitelji, pa čak je razmišljao i o tome da sestru upiše na konzervatorij jer je svirala violinu i oboavala glazbu. Ta sećanja koja su prolazila njegovom glavom sada su bila posve nekorisna. Znao bi satima stajati pored vrata i osluškivati šta se dešava u susednim prostorijama, tako da bi postao toliko iscrpljen da više uopće nije bio u stanju da sluša. Ipak je uspeo znati da je njegov otac sačuvao posve mali imutak koji se zbog kamata sada malo povećao i ta vest ga je malo razveselila. No taj novac nikako nije bio dovoljan da celoj porodici omogući da normalno ivi, što znači da je novac za ivot trebalo zaraditi. Iako je njegov otac zdrav, bio je star i već nekoliko godina ništa nije radio, a ni od majke se nije moglo ništa očekivati jer je bolovala od astme. Sestra je imala sedamnaest godina i još je uvek bila dete pa se ni od nje nije moglo očekivati da zarađuje novac. Kad god bi roditelji i sestra počeli da pričaju o tome kako bi trebalo zarađivati novac, Gregor bi se udaljavao od vrata i smeštao uz hladnu sofu jer bi osećao tugu i stid. Greta bi redovito uređivala sobu, a Gregor je patio jer se ne moe zahvaliti sestri na svemu šta radi za njega. Iako se ona trudila da Gregoru bude što manje neugodno zbog njegovog poloaja i to joj je uspevalo u početku, Gregor je s vremenom shvatio pa je sestrin dolazak u sobu za njega postao strašan. S vremenom se Gregor naučio na svoj novi ivot i obično bi se penjao na stolac s kojeg bi gledao van. Jednog dana se nije na vreme povukao ispod sofe pa je uplašio Gretu svojim izgledom. Od tada se trudio što bolje sakrivati pa je čak nekako uspeo da dovuče plahtu preko sofe kako bi se što manje video kada Greta dođe u sobu. Roditelji nikako nisu mogli da skupe dovoljno snage da uđu u njegovu sobu pa su zbog toga Greti odavali posebno priznanje zbog svega šta je do tada radila. Oboje su počeli da čekaju ispred Gregorove sobe dok bi ona čistila, a kada bi izašla van, morala im je detaljno prepričati kako soba izgleda. Porodica je bila premorena od rada pa nisu imali vremena da se previše brinu o Gregoru. Sve su više štedeli pa su morali da otpuste devojku koja je bila radila kod njih, samo bi ujutro i naveče dolazila dvorkinja koja je obavljala najosnovnije poslove, a ostalo je preuzela majka. Budući da je situacija bila jako teška, počeli su da prodaju porodični nakit. Počeli su i da se ale kako ne mogu da napuste stan koji im je sada postao prevelik jer nisu znali kako da presele Gregora, a on je znao da nije samo obzir prema njemu to šta sprečava selidbu njegove porodice, već siromaštvo. Majka i Greta bi navečer nakon što otac ode spavati znale plakati zbog toga u dnevnoj sobi. Gregor danima nije mogao da spava.
